Environmental Monitor

Duz Cho Construction is seeking an experienced Environmental Monitor to support our civil construction activities throughout British Columbia.

Duz Cho is a 100% Indigenous owned company, with ownership belonging to McLeod Lake Indian Band. The successful candidate will have a deep understanding of the diverse cultures and histories of local Indigenous communities. They must have demonstrated experience in applying Indigenous knowledge in a professional setting, adhering to cultural protocols, and working with a culturally safe approach. Knowledge of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC) Calls to Action and a commitment to advancing reconciliation are essential.

The Environmental Monitor will provide day-to-day environmental oversight of construction activities and work under the direction of a Qualified Environmental Professional (QEP). The position will work closely with project management, site supervision, safety personnel, construction crews and environmental professionals to ensure work is completed in accordance with project environmental requirements, permits, approvals and applicable legislation.

This is a field-focused position suited to an individual who understands civil construction and can effectively identify environmental risks, communicate requirements to construction teams and document compliance.

This position is full-time, permanent position that works:
• Rotation: 14 days on and 7 days off or TBD;
• Wage: $ 30 – $35 based on experience, applicable to overtime. 10- 12 hour days.
• Location: Vanderhoof BC – Field Position;
• Accommodation: LOA to be provided;
• Truck Allowance: Company vehicle to be provided or allowance with a fuel card;
• Reports to: Qualified Environmental Professional (QEP) / Project Management;

Roles & Responsibilities
• Conduct routine environmental inspections and monitoring of active construction areas.
• Work under the direction and professional oversight of the project’s QEP.
• Conduct water-quality monitoring and field sampling where required and within the individual’s training and qualifications.
• Monitor work occurring near watercourses, wetlands, riparian areas and other environmentally sensitive areas.
• Support monitoring associated with clearing, grubbing, earthworks, access construction, drainage works, stream crossings and other civil construction activities.
• Complete pre-construction environmental inspections and participate in environmental orientations, toolbox meetings and pre-work planning.
• Monitor environmental conditions during and following significant weather events.
• Document environmental observations, deficiencies, corrective actions and follow-up requirements.
• Prepare daily and/or weekly environmental monitoring reports, including photographs, inspection records and supporting documentation.
• Immediately escalate significant environmental concerns, incidents or potential non-compliances to project management and the QEP.
• Support environmental incident investigations and corrective-action tracking.
• Maintain organized environmental records suitable for client and regulatory review.
• Coordinate with project supervision to incorporate environmental requirements into construction planning and sequencing.
• Assist the QEP with regulatory reporting, environmental documentation and other project-specific requirements.
• Participate in client, contractor and environmental coordination meetings as required.
• Monitor erosion and sediment control measures and recommend maintenance or corrective actions.
• Monitor construction activities for compliance with Environmental Management Plans, Construction Environmental Management Plans (CEMPs), Environmental Protection Plans (EPPs), permits, approvals and project-specific environmental requirements.
• Identify environmental risks and communicate required mitigation measures to project supervision and the QEP.

Qualifications:
• Passing an alcohol and drug test and physical test is a condition of employment;
•Diploma or degree in environmental science, environmental technology, biology, natural resource management, forestry or a related discipline.
•Previous environmental monitoring experience on civil construction, mining, forestry, utilities, transmission, pipeline or resource-development projects in British Columbia.
•Working knowledge of erosion and sediment control practices.
•Experience with environmental inspections, field documentation and environmental monitoring reports.
•Familiarity with British Columbia environmental legislation, regulatory requirements and industry best practices.
•Experience working around watercourses and environmentally sensitive areas.
•Strong understanding of construction activities and the ability to communicate effectively with field supervisors and equipment operators.
•Strong written documentation and reporting skills.
•Ability to work independently in remote field environments.
•Valid Class 5 driver’s licence. Preferred Qualifications: Preference may be given to candidates with:
• 3+ years of environmental monitoring experience in British Columbia.
• Experience on major civil, mining, transmission, pipeline or linear infrastructure projects.
• ESC/erosion and sediment control training or certification.
• Water-quality sampling and monitoring experience.
• Fish and wildlife identification and monitoring experience.
• Experience with fish salvage, wildlife sweeps or nesting-bird surveys where appropriately trained and authorized.
• Familiarity with Indigenous-owned construction organizations and projects involving Indigenous communities.
• Experience working directly with QEPs, environmental consultants and regulatory agencies.
• OFA Level 1 or equivalent first-aid certification.

Reporting & Professional Oversight:

The Environmental Monitor will operate under the direction of the project’s Qualified Environmental Professional (QEP) for matters requiring professional environmental judgment. The Environmental Monitor will be responsible for routine field monitoring, documentation, implementation of established environmental requirements and identification of potential issues. Matters requiring professional interpretation, regulatory opinion, changes to approved environmental plans or professional sign-off will be escalated to the QEP. The Environmental Monitor will also maintain regular communication with the Project Manager and site supervision to ensure environmental requirements are incorporated into day-to-day construction activities. Authority Authority: The Environmental Monitor will have the authority to immediately raise environmental concerns with site supervision and recommend that work be modified or suspended where activities may result in environmental harm or non-compliance. Where immediate environmental risk exists, the Environmental Monitor will follow the project’s established stop-work and escalation procedures and promptly consult the QEP and Project Manager.

Working Conditions: This is primarily a field-based position and may involve:
• Remote project locations throughout British Columbia.
• Rotational work schedules.
• Extended periods outdoors in varying weather conditions.
• Walking over uneven terrain and active construction areas.
• Working around heavy equipment and active civil construction operations.
• Travel between project sites as required.
